Europe June '08 Part 6.2/12 - Nice

Had a bit of extra time today so I managed to edit and post up some pictures. This is the 2nd and final part for the Nice set.

Do you see what I see?

This 360 was actually something like a taxi. You pay X amount of Euros (depending on which route you take, the nicer route being the more expensive one) and the guy takes you for a ride in the 360. I was very tempted but it was simply too expensive :(. So I took pictures of it lol

Sorry for the super long hiatus! Time was not on my side at all. Only managed to post this up because I took the day off today hehe.

There are still 10 pictures to go for this set, hoping to get that up by the end of this week or next, depending on workload and life. (not that my time projections work - I just realised in my last post, I said next update may be in January :P)

Beautiful beautiful Montreux. I was absolutely awestruck by it. I particularly loved the blue surroundings here (which explains why most of the pictures in this set are all dominated by the colour blue).

A day in the life of a trainee banker

Been pretty caught up with work of late so I've been finding it difficult to post any new stuff. I actually took these pictures some time ago but never got around to putting it up due to time constraints (assignments and tests grr). But since this is my first commitment-free Sunday in a long long time, I figured I'd at least put this set up.

The shots to come is a summary of a typical day at work. They were all taken with my phone's camera so the quality is abysmally terrible, but do bear with me (sidenote: taking donations for a new sony camera phone).

The day starts at 6:30am (even earlier now that I've been rotated to Research)

After showering and breakfasting, it's off I go. Smart tunnel for Smart people.

One of the better views on the way to work. I do not normally drive this dangerously btw :P

Morning meetings at 8. Yours truly will be having a hand at preparing the stuff to be said at such meetings

That's what a typical classroom session looks like. Classes ended last Friday

Zipping forward in time (and cutting out all the boring regulatory talk), it's 5:30pm. Punctuality at its finest, and it's off I go

Post-dinner, shower and checking mails/replying messages, 10:30pm means it's time to go to bed. Sleep, wake up the next day, and the grind repeats itself

So that's how a typical day goes. Some of these will probably change as I rotate across different departments but I suppose it'll still be as grindful as ever.

Geneva is a really nice place (except for how French is the main language there). I'm sure it'll look even more gorgeous in winter, when the mountain peaks are covered with snow. Who knows, maybe I'll go there again sometime in the near future, but this time not following a tour group. It's somewhat potong stim as a photographer because you'd have to abide by all their (usually unforgiving) time schedules.

But in any case, next set will be of Montreux, on another side of Lake Geneva.

Sorry for the delay! I just got Photoshop yesterday and set to work earlier today. Can't say for sure how many parts in total this set will have because I took loads of pictures. Broke each main city into a few smaller subsets to make uploading easier.

At the moment, I've only done the edits for Paris, which will be split into 3 smaller parts. So here goes!

Finally got home after a short 2 week holiday. Covered some parts of France, Switzerland and Italy during that time (Paris-Geneva-Nice-Venice-Rome). Had to endure some gruelling bus rides along the way but I guess it was well worth it in the end.

Here's a before and after shot of my arm.

Looks much more pronounced IRL. The flash made it seem less dark than it actually is.

I took about 700 shots within the 2 weeks so it'll probably take me quite awhile to review all the shots, let alone decide which ones to put up. Stick around over the next 2 months or so I guess :P

Bristol Zoo Part 1/3 - Reptiles & Insects

So I finally paid a (long overdue) visit to the Zoo a few days ago. Low light conditions and glass enclosures (meaning no flash and nasty reflections from ambient lighting) made some shots hell to take. I had 3 choices - underexpose my pictures, use a higher ISO (which also means more noise) or somehow remain totally still while the picture was being taken. Ultimately, only the first 2 options were viable so I had to play around with the settings and reach a reasonable compromise. Some shots though were just simply unshootable so I left it at that.

I wouldn't say the shots were fantastic, but it definitely was something different compared to what I've been shooting all along. Sadly, my camera died early in this trip. I do not know if it's a fault with the camera itself or the batteries, but I ran through 2 pairs of batteries shooting only less than 200 pictures/2 hours. As a result, I missed some rather interesting shots :(

Anywho, on to the pictures.

...and found out that it ends there, far behind the row of houses. So much for my pot of gold :(

I feel that this looks more like a painting than a photograph when viewed in small-medium size

That is all for this set. The pictures of Brandon Hill were somewhat disappointing imo but at least some of the Harbourside ones came out nice.

The next set will be pictures of Bristol Zoo. However, that will take a few days at the very least as I juggle between packing, finding out my results and editing the pictures. The zoo outing was quite a challenging one as I found myself in unfamiliar (and naturally, unfavourable) shooting conditions. But sadly, that will be a story for another day.

Woke up early one Sunday morning to try and get a glimpse of sunrise. Sadly, it was nothing too magnificent. The peaceful morning was also marred by some drunk buggers who insisted on shouting all over the place for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Brandon Hill & Co. - Part 1/2

Seeing how I've not touched my camera in a long long time, I decided to take a walk to Brandon Hill to take some photos. It was raining quite a lot on that day so I only got to go out pretty late, around 6-7pm. Some of the shots were taken along the way and feature familiar landmarks from previous entries.

Also, for some reason, my batteries died really really early (either it's because they're still new or there's something very wrong with my camera) and I left the spares at home so I didn't manage to take as many pictures as I wanted to. Some shots were also taken rather hastily. I'll probably revisit this place sometime later with properly charged batteries. Who knows, it might be even nicer in summer.

Meet the Bentleys

Some guys from Bentley came to my uni today to give a talk. Coming from Bentley, you weren't expecting them to show up in Ford Fiestas were you? Well they didn't disappoint.

2 of them showed up in an Azure

And 2 more in a Continental GT.

After the talk, they hung around outside Queen's Building and shortly after, a small crowd started gathering around the 2 cars. They were nice enough to let people climb in and out of the cars and even left the engine running. I went to have a look at the Azure first.

It was beautiful. The car just looked so handsome. Very well mannered, and definitely very formal. Felt a little like a proper English tea session. Clad in jeans and a t-shirt (typical uni student wear), I felt severely underdressed while sitting in the Azure.

The interior was just as nice. Beige leather and wood trims all over. The gear lever and window switches were a little too bling though. I thought it would've been nicer if it had a matt finish instead.

The car felt very very classy. I overheard one of the Bentley guys saying the whole car is handbuilt and costs somewhere in the region of £250,000. I also heard someone asking them how fast it accelerates and what's the top speed like and I thought to myself - hell it wouldn't matter how fast this car is, I'm definitely in no hurry to get to my destination if I were in an Azure!

The one other thing I didn't like about the Azure was the engine. It's a 6.8L V8 and it sounded very coarse. Too coarse in fact for such a luxurious car.

Onto the Continental GT then.

I didn't take many pictures of this car. In fact, I only took 2 shots. One at the beginning of this post, and one at the end of it. Why you ask? Because no matter how many shots I took, from any angle whatsoever, I still thought the car looked like crap. Now I've got nothing against Bentleys. I even thought the Continental Flying Spur was beautiful. But somehow, the Continental GT just looked weird to me. Kinda like a Porsche Cayenne. Not for everyone.

Then I sat in it. The interior was typical dull black leather. Nothing particularly interesting apart from the engine starter button (even that was just a small black button). You kinda get the feeling that they spent all the money designing the Arnage/Azure and got broke when it came to the Continental.

And then I gave the throttle a soft jab. The rev needle twitched a little. A firmer jab maybe? The rev needle twitched further up this time and there was a faint rumble. Third time around, I pressed it down firmly, all the way to 4,000rpm. Big W12 engine, top down, 4,000rpm - it was pure aural ecstasy.

There and then, I could've sworn the only thing stopping me from driving off with the car was the crowd of people surrounding it. I got down from the car. And then I climbed in again some moments later. And down. And in again after more moments later. It just sounded so good and I couldn't get enough of it. But alas, thick Chinese face can only take you so far and I decided that 3 times is enough.

That's probably the closest I'll ever come to being in/near a live Bentley (partly due to the fact that I won't want one in the future) but it was great fun though. Now I wonder when Ferrari is coming to visit my uni... A topless 355/360/430 Spyder would pretty much be orgasmic I'm sure (mid-engine glory at its best).

P/s sorry for the poor picture quality. I took the pictures with my phone camera and my lens was pretty dusty as well. I took some sound clips too but nothing could be made out of it so I deleted them.

I was just listening to the French adaptation of this song (sung by Laura Fygi) and I had a sudden urge to locate the song's English counterpart. The French title is Pour te plaire, which in no way translates to That's All, so it took me quite a while to find out what the English title is -_- .

Oddly though, I didn't have it on my computer so I had to turn to YouTube for it. And since it's on YouTube, I figured I might as well share this beautiful song with anyone who has not heard it yet. I hope you like it as much as I did.

The weather forecast says it all. Since I came back, it's been nothing but dark, gloomy skies and non-stop rain. I don't think I've even seen the sun since coming back. The forecast shows a bright yellow sun on Tuesday. But the forecast also showed a bright yellow sun for last Thursday and it ended up raining and raining and raining and raining.....

Bah even the weather isn't helping me ease the transition blues. I'm glad though that the temperature is at comfortable levels. And that daytime is becoming longer (slowly but surely).
God I can't wait for the clocks to go forward at the end of March.

I was very disappointed at how I couldn't get any good sunrise/sunset pictures though. I thought that since there was a nice area overlooking the open sea, I would be able to at least get one nice sunset picture. How wrong was I. 2 evenings, and 2 very boring 7pm skies.

For the uninitiated, the Eye on Malaysia is a 1 year only ferris wheel ride located in the Titiwangsa Lake Gardens built in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007. It'll only be here this year so if you have yet to go on it, you better do so soon!

I was there for a Toyota event but sadly, there weren't alot of pictures to be taken. There was a fireworks performance at the end but my pictures were terribly awful so I won't be putting them up.

Here are some scenic shots of the island. The first 2 days were pretty bad for photographs because of cloudy skies and not-so-clear waters. Thankfully, the last day was nice and sunny.

Here are some activities that kept us occupied throughout the trip.

Swimming

Beach volleyball

Posing on the beach

Throwing rocks into the sea, trying to outbounce one another

Pretending to be a spiderbear

And naturally, eating

We also went snorkelling but I didn't take any pictures for fear of drowning my camera. Nightlife in Perhentian include playing cards (and making people go into smelly toilets as a form of punishment), eating/mamaking (there's a little restaurant downstairs which serves authentic Mamak cuisine) and watching blur pirated VCDs in the common area.

Perhentian Island Summer '07 Part 1/4 - Accommodation Blues

Upon reaching the island on the first day, we were all pretty excited and looking forward to begin our relaxing holiday. Shortly after, we were given the keys to our room and we quickly went off to look for our room. Door opens and.....

Oh, the horror

Yup, the rooms were really sad. Not exactly the way we pictured ourselves spending this holiday. We were already beginning to count down the days till we go home.

After an hour or so, we saw a group of people packing and leaving the place. We made some small talk and found out that they're shifting to another resort a short walk away from our current place. Well, it can't get any worst can it? We then decided to have a look at this other resort.

Zomgbbq we were out of that shithole in like flashbangshazam and checked into Arwana Perhentian Resort. Best decision ever made and it made our trip VERY MUCH MORE bearable. Only after that were we able to really enjoy the holiday.
So next time you're planning a trip, never ever stinge on the accommodation. It makes alot of difference.

Just got back from holiday on Sunday. I was at Perhentian Island from Wednesday to Sunday (should have been back by Saturday, but the bus screwed us over big time). Took quite a fair bit of pictures so will be awhile before I finish uploading all of em. Hope to get it all up by the end of the week.

A Little Update

I just got back from UK a few days ago (reached home on the 12th to be exact). I've been busy catching up with life and getting used to the time here over the past few days. I also don't have my laptop with me, which explains my disappearance from MSN recently.

But I do have some pictures which I took both in UK and at home which are still waiting to be uploaded (will do that as soon as I figure out how to..) and I hope to get it up asap so everyone else can have a look at it.

The connection and upload speed here is ridiculous though so it might take a wee bit longer than expected.

Royal Fort Gardens - revisited

Went back to Royal Fort Gardens again today, hoping that it would somewhat be in full bloom and I would be able to get some nice macro shots. How disappointed was I. There was almost nothing in there that was nice and photographable =(

And I really need to work on my White Balance. I realised today that the camera's Auto White Balance is pretty much useless.

Dirty kitchen? Must be your housemates

On the first day of shifting into my new property sometime in October 06, I had high hopes. What kind of people will I be living with? Are they nice? How will my room be like? Will everything be nice and tidy?

I blame it all on my first year housemates, who were awesome people.

Well the room bit was fine. No bloodstain on the walls or stuff like that. What's next? To check out the kitchen of course. Boy was I in for a surprise

Believe it or not? All this junk came from one person only

Yup, not the ideal way to kick off the year. Kitchen was in a complete mess and I could kinda guess how my year would go.

Fast forward 8 months to June 07. Nothing has changed

Looks can be deceiving. You'll never guess what's under the bin..

Even the poor bee can't take it anymore

Not to mention that everytime I enter the kitchen now, there's this funny smell coming out of somewhere... At least I only have a few more days before I leave this damn place and never come back. Sure hope I get better housemates next year.
